Over 300,000 Households on London’s Social Housing Waiting List: Make a difference with Elliot Leigh

Updated: Nov 21

London’s housing crisis is reaching a tipping point, with more than 323,000 households waiting for social housing. This statistic highlights the ongoing need for innovative solutions and increased collaboration among policymakers, housing associations, and the private sector. Elliot Leigh’s Making a Difference, One Home at a Time campaign is a shining example of how collective action can transform lives, offering practical steps to address this crisis.

The Reality of London’s Housing Shortage

According to a new report by Centre for London, in partnership with G15 housing associations, the average wait time for a three-bedroom social housing property in the capital is over five years. For smaller homes, the wait is still substantial, at over two years for studios and one-bedroom properties. East London, where Elliot Leigh headquarters is based, faces the worst delays, with families often waiting nearly six years for a suitable home.

Clearly, the current pace of delivering social housing - averaging just 1,148 homes annually between 2020 and 2023 - falls terribly short of the required 33,000 homes per year.

Elliot Leigh’s Social Housing Campaign

While systemic changes are critical, Elliot Leigh’s Making a Difference, One Home at a Time campaign plays an essential role in bridging the gap. The campaign focuses on providing quality homes (that would traditionally be used for private lettings) to local authorities. Creating immediate impact while alleviating pressure on the social housing system.

By collaborating with landlords, councils, and housing organisations, Elliot Leigh’s Guaranteed Rent scheme helps bring quality homes back into circulation. Though a temporary solution to a longer term problem, it provides safe, affordable housing for families in need. The campaign’s success hinges on partnerships and community involvement, showcasing the power of collective action to tackle London’s housing challenges.

The Human Impact

Behind the statistics are families waiting years for stability, individuals struggling with mental health due to inadequate housing, and children growing up in overcrowded conditions. The combination of bold policy changes and compassionate campaigns offers hope for these individuals. Elliot Leigh’s latest campaign is a reminder that even small actions can have a profound ripple effect, one home, one family, and one life at a time.

A Landlord’s Role: Guaranteed Rent as a Solution

Elliot Leigh's guaranteed rent solution offers landlords a stress-free way to contribute to resolving the housing crisis. Through this program, landlords receive assured rental income while their properties are utilised to house families in need. This innovative approach not only supports the social housing system but also ensures properties are managed professionally and efficiently, benefiting both landlords and tenants.

London’s housing crisis is daunting, and faces many challenges that combined efforts could overcome. Through a collaborative approach that pairs large-scale Government policy reforms with community-driven initiatives like Elliot Leigh’s campaign, we can begin to restore hope and dignity to those in need.
