The biting chill of a late March night served as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those without a safe place to call home. On Friday, the 21st of March, four members of the Elliot Leigh team experienced a sliver of that reality, participating in the Centrepoint Sleep Out. This wasn't merely an exercise; it was a powerful act of solidarity, deeply rooted in our core social values and our commitment to making a tangible difference.
At Elliot Leigh, we believe strong social values are the foundation of a responsible and successful business. This belief permeates everything we do, guided by principles of Quality & Safety, Collaboration & Partnerships, Sustainability & Environmental Responsibility, Social Responsibility, and Innovation & Adaptability. These values are not just words on paper; they drive our actions and shape our impact.
Our social impact is further defined by our five key social pillars, which guide our proactive efforts to improve our community:
Environmental: We are dedicated to minimising our environmental footprint through responsible resource management, waste reduction, and energy efficiency. We embrace innovation to find sustainable solutions within the property sector.
Workplace: We foster a safe, inclusive, and thriving workplace where our employees are valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Community: We actively engage with our local community, building strong partnerships and investing in initiatives that empower individuals and communities to thrive.
Social & Housing: We are committed to providing safe, affordable, and accessible housing, working closely with local authorities and landlords to support vulnerable families and individuals. As our co-founder, Elliot Altman, states, “Every property we lease means that there's one more family that has a roof over their heads and out of hotels, hostels and other inconvenient properties.”
Philanthropy: We give back to the community through strategic philanthropic efforts, supporting charitable organisations that align with our values and have a measurable positive impact.
This commitment is exemplified by our Elliot Leigh TLC (Transforming Leaving Care) Team. This program, a core part of our business, focuses on helping local authorities to transform lives and build futures by providing semi-independent housing and support for young people aged 16 to 25, guiding them towards independence.
Centrepoint: A Beacon of Hope in a Challenging Landscape
Centrepoint stands as a leading charity in the UK, dedicated to providing young homeless people with the tools and support they need to build a future. The statistics paint a sobering picture:
According to Centrepoint, in 2023-2024, 118,134 young people were homeless or at risk of homelessness in the UK.
A young person becomes homeless approximately every 4 minutes in the UK.
The current cost of living crisis, combined with family breakdowns, significantly contributes to the rise in youth homelessness.
Centrepoint offers essential services:
Safe accommodation.
Support in gaining education and employment.
Access to vital health and well-being services.
The Centrepoint Sleep Out is a critical event that raises awareness and generates vital funds to support this essential work.
Elliot Leigh's Contribution: A Tangible Impact, Rooted in Our Values
Our team united, driven by our core social values, to raise a total of £1,640. This achievement was made possible by:
A successful staff raffle, with congratulations to Heather, who won a delightful afternoon tea for two in Knightsbridge, and to Stuart, who earned a well-deserved day off with a spa treatment.
The generous contributions from our staff and the company itself.
The four Elliot Leigh team members who braved the Sleep Out experienced first-hand the harsh realities faced by those without shelter. The cold, the hard ground, and the vulnerability of sleeping outdoors created a profound sense of empathy. The night of the sleep out was a very impactful event. The team members experienced the harsh realities of sleeping outside. The hard ground, and the cold night air, was a stark reminder of what so many young people have to endure. Sharing this experience with other people, created a strong sense of comradery. This experience is a direct reflection of the work we do daily through our TLC team, providing safe housing and support to young people.
The Impact: Realising the Difference, Building Futures Together
The funds raised will directly support Centrepoint's vital work, aligning with our own efforts to provide housing solutions and support for vulnerable young people. The £1,640 we contributed will help Centrepoint provide:
Emergency accommodation, offering a safe haven for young people in crisis.
Funding for training programs, empowering young people to build independent futures, mirroring the goals of our TLC program.
Support services that address mental health and well-being.
